Enabling your Travel eSIM ONLY for Roaming

How to Use Your Travel eSIM ONLY for Mobile Data

Make sure your travel eSIM is set as the active data line to avoid using your primary SIM while abroad.

iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular)
  3. Tap Mobile Data again
  4. Select your eSIM as the data line
  5. Tap your eSIM plan → toggle Data Roaming to On
  6. Tap your Primary sim  → Toggle Data Roaming to OFF

Android

(Menu names vary slightly by device)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Network & Internet (or Connections)
  3. Tap SIMs or SIM Manager
  4. Under Mobile Data, select your eSIM
  5. Enable Data Roaming if it's not already on
  6. Under Mobile data, select your Primary SIM
  7. Disable Data Roaming if it is not already off

💡 Cost-Saving Tip: Avoid Charges from Your Primary SIM

Even if you don’t use your main SIM for data, receiving calls or texts can still incur roaming charges. Check with your domestic provider before you travel on the costs to receive calls and SMS whilst travelling.

To fully protect yourself:

  • iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile Data > SIMs → Toggle off your primary SIM
  • Android: Go to Settings > SIM Manager → Toggle off your primary SIM

This ensures that only your travel eSIM is active, preventing accidental charges while staying connected.

WARNING: Turning off your Primary sim will mean that people cannot call or SMS you. They can still call and message on data messaging services like iMessage and Whatsapp on your primary number but not standard SMS or cellular calling.
