Global, Regional, or Local? - and why it matters.

Where are you going?

Travel eSIM's come in 3 formats. Global, regional, and local. As the names would suggest, these eSIM's are differentiated by their geographical capabilities.... (or are they?) This diversification in eSIM capability is primarily there to reduce costs, thankfully, both for the vendor and for you.

Global eSIM's can be used almost anywhere in the world, although beware of certain vendors understanding of the term Global. Regional eSIM's are designed to group together countries and territories that have similar price points, or where the consumer travel is most common. Local eSIM's are only valid for the country they were purchased for.

Global doesn't mean everywhere

All eSIM vendors vary in terms of their geographical coverage depending upon their Mobile Network partners and their corresponding network roaming agreements.

Smaller vendors may operate with one Network and so are limited to that single network's coverage. Larger vendors will have multiple relationships and so can offer larger coverage or a choice of eSIM depending upon your needs.

As of writing, there are 195 recognised countries and Observed states in the world. but many vendors publish anything from 60 to 220 countries and territories, but as a guide any vendor claiming over 180 country's as their coverage, can realistically claim to be Global. However, there are usually caveats to any coverage claim. Countries at war, in a state of emergency, or even under political sanctions, may or may not have an active mobile network.

Always check if your chosen vendor has your specific destination covered before you travel.

Local isn't always Local

Following the eSIM industry trend of behind the scenes manipulation of the product, many vendors offer localised rates in specific countries which will be only slightly cheaper than a regional plan. In most cases, the eSIM that you download and use, will be the exact same 'Roaming' eSIM as if you opted for a Global or regional plan.

The only difference, is that it this is another devious way to ensure that you don't have a chance to use all of your paid for data.

For example. If you are travelling into France and you buy a 10GB eSIM package for France only, valid for 30 days. If you wanted to drive across into Spain or Belgium for the day, you wouldn't be able to utilise any of that data. Even though technically, there is a good chance that the eSIM itself is capable of doing it, You'd have to upgrade to a Belgium plan or a European bundle. Easy right? But you lose the data on your French package. No technical reason, just a commercial one from the vendor.

The Geographical Deception

Many eSIM vendors mis-advertise “local” or country-specific plans, giving you the impression that you’re buying direct access to a local network. In reality, most of these plans are simply roaming eSIMs repackaged with artificial limits and virtual geographical restrictions.

The vendor restricts usage to a single country, not because of technical necessity, but to control how you use your data and to encourage repeat purchases. This packaging tactic creates the illusion of a local plan while quietly locking you into the vendor’s ecosystem.

Even if you’ve paid for a generous data allowance, limiting it to one country often prevents you from using it to its full potential, especially if your travel plans inadvertently take you across international borders. Essentially, you’re paying for freedom you don’t get.

Once again the plan is subtly designed to benefit the vendor more than the traveller.
